Things to do in White River, Mpumalanga and surrounds

 

The Bird Hide Chalet is the perfect base from which to explore some of the best tourist attractions in South Africa.  You will also find that White River and surrounds offer many unforgetable adventure activities, things to do, sites to see and restaurants to try. You will want to come back again and again for an incredible holiday for all!

Adventure Activities:

  • Bring your canoe or motor boat for a day out on the water at Pine Lake (2 minutes drive away),  or sailing at Da Gama Dam and Witklip dam. 

  • Challenge yourself on one of the many mountain bike and trail running tracks in the plantations (15 minute drive), MTO trails near Klipkopjie Dam (20 minute drive), Sabie (45 minute drive). There are trails for all levels. 

  • Contact Induna Adventures in Hazyview (45 minute drive) to go quad biking, river rafting, tubing/geckoing down Sabie river, learn archery or play paintball

  • Try ziplining through the canopy with Hazyview skyway trails

  • Microlight, bantum or helicopter flips

  • Hiking on the many incredible hiking trails in Mpumalanga especially in Kaapschehoop, Blyde River Canyon or Fanie Botha Trail in Sabie

Tourist Attractions:

  • Kruger National Park (easy access through Numbi gate, or you can also explore the park through Phabeni, Paul Kruger or Malelane gate). You can drive yourself or use a private safari tour company in an open game drive vehicle, or book a morning or evening game drive with SAN Parks. 

  • Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre (5 minutes away) with upmarket Curio shops, restaurants, an art gallery, motor museumanimal farm, Barnyard Theatre, and the quaint little cinema which only shows excellent movies and serves food and drinks. Find out when the next Casterbridge farmers market is. 

  • Lowveld National Botanic Gardens in Nelspruit is more than your ordinary botanic garden, with incredible waterfalls, river and forest walks

  • Sudwala caves, crystal tour 6km underground

  • Butterfly park and Dinosaur park at Sudwala caves

  • Meet chimpanzees at Jane Godall's Chimp Eden

  • Pine Lake, Da Gama Dam and Witklip Dam for canoeing, boating (motor boats at Pine Lake only), picnics or fishing. 

  • Kaapschehoop views, hikes, picnics and restaurants

  • Graskop Gorge Lift: take a glass lift into the depths of the Graskop gorge and explore the informative board walk at the bottom

  • Graskop gorge swing and zipline, which is the tallest cable gorge swing in the world

  • Pilgrims Rest: go back in history in this quaint gold mining museum town set in 1874, 

  • Snake and reptile park in Hazyview

  • Elephant Whisperer's experience in Hazyview

  • Bourkes Luck Potholes: incredible rock pool formations

  • God's Window views

  • Blyde River Canyon views, hikes or boat cruise

  • Misty Mountain Taboggan ride

  • Waterfalls: Lone Creek and Bridal Veil falls in Sabie, Lisbon, Berlin, Forest, and Mac Mac falls on the panarama route.

  • Sabie Brewery and Hops Hollow Brewery on Long Tom Pass

  • Day spa at Greenway woods or Oliver's, or Summerfields for an outdoor spa experience on the edge of the Sabie river. 

  • Day tours of the Panarama route

  • Barberton Museum about the gold rush

  • Barberton Geotrail: incredible views up the Makhonjwa mountain pass with self guided informative stops to learn about the unique rock formations from over 3 billion years ago. A UNESCO world heritage site

  • Day tour of Eswatini (Swaziland) or Maputo, Mozambique 

  • Village tour

  • Elmswood Clay Cafe where you can paint ceramics while you have coffee and a meal in the gardens. (20 min away)
